About Dr Susan Iland

Dr Susan Iland is a very experienced general practitioner, caring for the whole spectrum of general medicine – from the cradle to the grave. She is a mother and a grandmother, which adds an extra dimension of life experience to the care of her patients.

Dr Iland was instrumental in the establishment of the Antenatal Shared Care programme, which has since been adopted throughout NSW. She is experienced in the care of pregnant women, newborns, infants and children. She has previously been Deputy Director of the St Vincent’s Health Assessment Centre, and developed their protocol for assessing women’s health. She looks after disabled and elderly patients in their home or nursing home, and is involved with home palliative care.

Dr Iland has served on numerous boards including Eastern Sydney Division of General Practice, Eastern Sydney Medicare Local, Central and Eastern Sydney Primary Health Network, and she is currently chair of General Practice Eastern Sydney. These activities enable her to promote a broad range of issues that are of concern to her patients, the community, and her fellow GPs.

Involvement in continuing self-education and the training of the next generation of doctors has always been an important focus of Dr Iland’s work. She has been a tutor for medical students at the University of NSW, and has a Certificate from the Family Planning Association. She obtained a Master’s Degree in Psychological Medicine from the University of NSW, which has given her expertise in managing the mental health problems of her patients.
